California Adopts New Standards
~ The Common Core Standards ~

Dear Parent or Guardian,

California has adopted new Common Core Standards for the education of your children. All parents should know about the changes the new Standards will bring to the instruction, curriculum, and testing of public school students. Here is a brief introduction to the new Standards we hope will be helpful in understanding those changes:

What are the Common Core Standards?

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative is a national education initiative that will bring states’ curricula into alignment by using standards-based education reform. The CCSS was initially sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what K–12 grade students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to reflect the knowledge and skills that our young people will need for success in college, in their chosen career, and in the global economy.

Have the Common Core Standards been adopted widely in the USA?

Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, four US territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity have adopted the Common Core State Standards  The CCSS are now the officially adopted California English Language Arts and Mathematics content standards for K-12.

Why has California adopted the Common Core Standards?

The adoption of the Common Core Standards was voluntary by each state. California, along with stakeholders from nearly every state in the country, contributed to their development. California educators from elementary through high school, community and four-year college faculty, curriculum and assessment experts, education researchers, national organizations, and community groups gave feedback and participated directly in a thorough review process that shaped the new Standards. After careful review of the final Common Core Standards, the California State Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt the new Standards on August 2, 2010.

When do the Common Core Standards take effect in California?

Although the Common Core Standards were adopted by California in 2010, it will take several years to fully implement the CCSS using newly designed instructional materials and assessments based on the new standards. Beginning in 2011, each local school district was tasked with developing their own local plan for implementing the Common Core in their schools, based on local needs and resources. Some districts are farther along than others in implementing the CCSS, but in many classrooms in California there is already evidence of positive changes brought about by the new Standards. The first state assessments to measure progress on the CCSS will be given in 2015. Contact your local school district to learn about their plans for implementing the Common Core.
